The transfer of hundreds of virtual reality patents from sony a Meta opened questions about the future of PlayStation VR2 and the continuity of the Japanese company in this market.
Records from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) show that 43 patents related to virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies passed into the hands of Meta between June and September 2026 as part of a global agreement that includes 419 patents.
The operation, whose agreement dates back to December 2025, includes developments related to viewers, display systems and image processing. However, it does not mean that Meta has bought PlayStation’s entire virtual reality business nor that Sony has announced the end of its devices.

Sony sold its virtual reality patents to Meta and puts the future of the PlayStation VR2 in doubt.
The transferred patents cover innovations developed between 2010 and 2022. These include technologies for head-worn devices, display systems, image processing and virtual object rendering. These developments may be relevant to the virtual and mixed reality glasses that Meta markets under the Quest family.
The acquisition expands the intellectual property available to Meta, which competes in a market where hardware, interfaces and immersive experiences are central elements. However, the transfer of patents does not in itself prove that the company is going to incorporate these technologies into a specific product.
What is Sony left with? The operation does not imply that it has sold PlayStation VR2, the PlayStation brand, its games or all its research capacity in virtual reality. Nor does it confirm that it has given up all its technological developments related to this industry. What is publicly known is the transfer of a set of intellectual property rights belonging to Sony Group.

Meta Quest 3 is Meta’s virtual reality headset that competes in this market. (Goal)
Released in February 2023, PlayStation VR2 represented a technological evolution compared to Sony’s first headset for PS4. The device incorporated OLED screens, eye tracking and controls with haptic feedback, among other features. However, its initial price, the need to connect it to a PS5 and a catalog with significant participation from external studios limited its commercial scope.
Among its notable games are Mountain called horizon and Ultra Firewall. In 2024, Sony also released an adapter that allows the headset to be used on PC, expanding its compatibility beyond the console.
The sale of patents thus adds to the questions about the support that the device will receive in the coming years. Still, without an official announcement, it is not possible to say that Sony has canceled an eventual PlayStation VR3 or that it has decided to withdraw from virtual reality.

PlayStation VR2 enters an uncertain future after the sale of patents related to this business by Sony.
The patent transfer occurs against a backdrop of changes in PlayStation’s strategy. In July 2026, Sony confirmed that it will stop producing physical discs for new games on its consoles starting in January 2028.. From that date, new releases will be sold in digital format, although titles published or planned on disc before the deadline will not be affected.
The decision does not mean that Sony will immediately stop manufacturing all discs or that existing physical games will disappear. The company indicated that the change responds to the growth of digital purchases.
Both movements point to a business transformationbut they correspond to different decisions: one affects the distribution of video games and the other affects the ownership of certain patents.
For now, the future of PlayStation VR2 remains without an official definition. The transfer to Meta constitutes a relevant signal to follow Sony’s strategy, but it is not enough to conclude that the company has abandoned virtual reality.
